SLY COLLINS HONORED AT INTERNATIONAL AFRICAN ACHIEVERS AWARDS 2015
Ghanaian High-life musician, Obiba Sly Collins was honored at 5th edition of the International African Achievers Awards last Saturday, 17th October 2015 at the Airport West Hotel in Accra, themed ‘Accra Mega Awards’.
The outstanding musician and a businessman, Obiba Sly Collins, received an honorary award in a category dubbed Great African Patriotic Achiever Merit for Transparency and Accountability alongside other Ghanaians like Alhaji Faisal Nero, business guru, Hon. Abigail Elorm Mensah, aspiring MP for Fanti Wali and T’Best Ghana (Jeba Hair Cream and T’Best fruit juice)
Sly Collins has been in the music industry in Ghana for more than three decades.
The last time Obiba Sly Collins dropped an album was about three years ago and it was a patriotism album which called for a ‘violence-free election’. He dropped an album in 2008 and later followed it up with a single Peace Song in 2012. This year he has returned with an 11-track CD titled Voice of Reason. Though no one can say this is the last CD compilation he is releasing, this work showcases another side of the multi-instrumentalist who has spent much of his time preaching peace and unity through music.
Obiba Sly Collins is a patriot and philanthropist, and founder of Obiba Foundation, an NGO reaching out to many underprivileged youths and children in Ghana. Now, his aim is to fund the education of many orphans in the Central region through putting up school structures, and through this service, other children who otherwise cannot afford education can dare to dream of a bright future. The NGO recently donated items to the fire victims in the June 3rd disaster, at 37 Military Hospital.
Recently he has adopted two children (5 and 7 years) whose father perished in the fire disaster. The Obiba Foundation has agreed to fund the fees of these children to the university level. His philanthropic vision leads him to envision a Ghana without struggle for underprivileged youths and children; apart from the Central region, he looks further to close the gaps between the urban and rural poor, into all the regions of Ghana, one region at a time.
The foundation encourages youths in the arts, and has worked hard to bring Tim Elliot of Harry Potter fame to Ghana, to impart to the youth some of his knowledge and skills in acting and also in the area of film directing and editing.
Sly Collins was one of the first Ghanaians to initiate collaboration between Ghanaian and Nigerian actors in film making, and has starred in movies as Zack Orji’s Tenterhooks, Small World, Hour before Midnight (Venus Films), and Call by Fire (Charles Okafor).
He serves as a director in Ojezi’s Music/Entertainment and Restaurant in Nigeria and Ghana. He is also managing director of Jiasheng Ghana limited, and CEO of Solaqua Company Limited, a brand now constructing thirty (30) schools for the government of Ghana in Upper East, Upper West and Northern Regions.
Outside the traditional highlife rhythms, Collins added some innovations as he confidently rendered the songs in English, Twi, Ewe and even Yoruba where the gospel track Dominion featuring Ngozi Orji (an actress and wife of famous actor Zack Orji) has become a must-play on early morning Christian radio programs. Sly’s newest hit is ‘Only Jesus can save’.
The awards which was organized by the African update International Magazine (the pride of African), Nelson Mandela International Foundation and Kweku vides, aimed at honoring prestigious persons in Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa) with categories including most outstanding deputy governor in west Africa, outstanding security personnel, outstanding academician, outstanding captain of industries, outstanding local government chairmen in west Africa.
